In 2009 I will be taking part in Marathon Des Sables, notoriously
the toughest foot race on earth, to raise money for Yorkshire
Cancer Research.
Marathon Des Sables (MdS) is a gruelling 6 day, 150 mile foot race
through some of the world's most barren desert terrain in temperatures
exceeding 40 degrees centigrade.
Competitors carry all their own rations, water, cooking and sleeping
equipment and are to all intents and purposes entirely self sufficient.
Since Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR) was set
up in 1925, they have become the most successful regional medical
research charity in the UK. They fund internationally recognised
research into the cause and cure of cancer at universities and their
associated teaching hospitals throughout Yorkshire.
YCR is not a regional division of a national charity
- they are an independent charity, based and operating in Yorkshire
only. They are still, however, at the very forefront of the international
fight to find a cure for cancer.
